The Newcastle Trinity House Board built Herd Groyne Lighthouse following plans from the Tyne Improvement Commission. The lighthouse first exhibited a light on 30th October 1882. Herd Groyne Lighthouse. The Groyne Pier was built between 1861 and 1867, designed to help the flow of the river, protecting Littlehaven Beach. The name comes from Herd.

This very unusual lighthouse resembling a 1940's sci-fi movie space craft is located on a small groyne in the river mouth at South Shields. It was built in 1882 and was at the mouth of the river before the north and south piers were built. It still acts as a navigational aid to ships entering the River Tyne.
