The new building designed by Peter Zumthor transfers the sum of the existing fragments into one complete building. In adopting the original plans and building on the ruins, the new building becomes part of the architectural continuum. The warm grey brick of the massive building unite with the tuffs, basalt and bricks of the ruins.

Its new home, built from 2003-07, was designed by Peter Zumthor and inaugurated by Joachim Meisner. The site was originally occupied by the romanesque Church of St. Kolumba, which was destroyed in World War II and replaced in 1950 by a Gottfried Böhm chapel nicknamed the "Madonna of the Ruins". These rutted and charred bricks eventually caught the eye of Peter Zumthor, a Pritzker-prize winning architect from Switzerland, who had just been commissioned to design the Kolumba Museum for the Archdiocese of Cologne's Roman Catholic art collection.
