The Z650 was one or the bikes that helped build up the Kawasaki reputation for powerful, bullet-proof fours; a reputation on which they are still trading. When it came out in 1977 it was faster than most 750s and proved astonishingly strong and reliable. It was the first of a new generation of engines.

The Kawasaki's sleeved-down, DOHC transverse four was more sophisticated and powerful than the Honda's SOHC version, producing 43bhp compared to the Honda's 37.

Like the factory customs offered by a variety of other manufacturers, Kawasaki created the SR by taking a bike they were already building (the KZ650) and dressing it up a bit to turn it into a boulevard cruiser. It was hardly an original idea, and in fact, Kawasaki had already applied the same recipe in 1976 with the KZ900 LTD.
