El "Batallón de Tiradores de Ifni" se crea por Decreto de 9 de junio de 1934 y se organiza en tres "tabores" -un "tabor" es una unidad militar del ejército colonial español equivalente a un pequeño batallón - por Orden de 11 de junio de 1934. Una vez iniciada la Guerra Civil española, en noviembre de 1936 se reorganizan en siete tabores.
