The town of Elliston, on Newfoundland's uber-scenic Bonavista Peninsula, is one of the top spots in North America to view puffins from land. These Atlantic Puffins are a sea bird that spend most of their time out on the ocean swimming and feeding.

The Atlantic Puffin is the only species of puffin that lives on the North Atlantic ocean and is the official bird of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The birds live at sea most of the year but return to land over the summer months to breed and raise their young. The puffins nest on steep grassy clifftops for the protection from predators.

Elliston Puffin Viewing Site: This nesting ground is located on the Bonavista peninsula in Eastern Region. It is one of the most accessible puffin colonies in the province, making it a popular destination.

Although you can sometimes spot puffins all over the Newfoundland shoreline, the Elliston lookout is the most consistent spot to see puffins without leaving dry land. Roughly 300 pairs of puffins nest there, although the area looks even more crowded because a few other species are found there, too.

Elliston is also known as the Root Cellar capital of the world, it is home to a great memorial and museum for the sealers of Newfoundland and the 1914 Sealing disasters, as well as being home to a quirky puffin train.Currently home to 300 people Elliston was once an active fishing village, tourism seems to be the main business these days.

The Atlantic Puffin is the smallest of the 4, weighing about the same as a can of pop (soda), and measuring around 25cm in length. There is no denying how unique Puffins are in their appearance, especially in comparison to other North American birds. This unique look has gained them the nicknames "sea parrots" or even "clowns of the sea".

Saw the Sealing Museum, the Newfoundland Sealing Disaster statue, had lunch, then drove down the road to the Puffin Site in Elliston. You park along the road, pay a small fee at the trailhead shack, then walk along the shore moors, around a high spot, and there - just a few feet off shore, is the puffin nesting rock. Thousands of them.

The puffin is also the official bird of Newfoundland and Labrador since 1992. The Atlantic Puffin is one of four puffin species and the only one that lives on the North Atlantic Ocean.

Witless Bay The Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, located near Bay Bulls, is home to one of North America's largest Atlantic puffin colonies. This area has whales and several bird species, including puffins, common murres, black guillemots, northern gannets, greater shearwaters, and northern fulmars.
