Sennheiser M421 as a kick mic? I'm looking for a kick mic, but also something that might have other uses as well. The M421 seems to be regarded as a good all around mic, I would also want to use it on elec guitar amps.

If I use a RE20, Sennheiser MD421 or Beyer M88 on the kick drum I would use for sure a SubKick to represent the sub frequencies that the kick drum has and are common on a modern jazz record, as those mics are not that responsive in the sub region. So for me it depends on the mic combination and choice, also of course on what the band/artist.

A simple budget way to mic drums would be something like your MD421 on kick, the SM57 on snare and two MC-012's X/Yed as overheads.
