Benedetto da Rovezzano (14741554)

Benedetto Grazzini, best known as Benedetto da Rovezzano (1474 - c. 1552) was an Italian architect and sculptor who worked mainly in Florence . He was born in Pistoia in 1474, and adopted the name Rovezzano from the quarter of Florence in which he lived. His most important works include: Pandolfini Chapel and cloister of the Badia Fiorentina.

Benedetto da Rovezzano, who worked in England from 1519 to around 1540, was a contemporary of Michelangelo working in marble, stone and bronze. One of his earliest commissions in 1508 was to finish Michelangelo's bronze 'David' (now lost), proving that his metal working skills were already very much in demand.

The Wolsey Angels were made by the Italian sculptor, Benedetto da Rovezzano (1474 - 1554), to adorn a magnificent tomb commissioned by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. After the English Civil War, the Angels disappeared, and were only recently rediscovered, having stood unrecognised on the gateposts of a stately home in Northamptonshire..
