8 Location Australia Jul 9, 2020 #1 Hi guys I have a 1990 80 series with 1HDT in it. Now im thinking about converting into either 1hdft or 1hdfte. I have heard 1hdfte is good but things can go wrong with electrical stuffs while off roading. And for 1hdft, all i know is basically the same as 1hdfte but no ECUs and common rail.

all 100 series should be 1HD-FTE models unless im mistaken. the solid axle 105 had the non turbo 1HZ as an option. the 1HD-T is in 1990-1994 80 series and the pump 1HD-FT is on 80 series 1995-1997. the 100 also had the petrol options of I6 1FZ-FE or v8 2UZ-FE. the V8 obviously has plenty of power at the cost of fuel economy.

The reason for the upgrades is to get the best tow wagon that I can from an 80 series cruiser with a 1HDT engine and 4 speed auto. Mods already done: 6" suspension lift. 35" tyres Diff ratios changed too 4.88's with ARB diff lock in rear. Trans cooler I think its a 2.5" exhaust with exhaust brakes. I've got my 1hdt running well with a good tune. it is intercooled with an air water intercooler and i have it boosted to max 16psi. i typically run at around 600 to 700 degrees f on a summer day when at highway speed. only have a puff of smoke when shifting gears and otherwise none. i have done the tune up work with the intent of pulling a trail.

The 1Hdt came out of a written off 80 series with rear end damage and has currently about 420.000 is on it, which is pretty normal for its age and being in Australia. The compression test showed 420psi +- a few psi through out the motor. It runs smooth and blows a bit of black smoke.
