Pre Decimal Coin Sizes. Pre-decimal coin sizes were much larger than modern coins. The largest pre-decimal coin was the sovereign, which was 22.05 mm in diameter and weighed 7.98 grams. The half sovereign was 16.7 mm in diameter and weighed 3.99 grams. The shilling was 12.0 mm in diameter and weighed 2.83 grams.
