Today, I expand on one of the tips for creating curb appeal — shutter color.

As you learned in the last blog post, your roof plays a significant role in your home’s appearance. It can be up to 30 percent of what you see. When choosing the color for your shutters, using a color that is the same as the color of your roof is one way to create an attractive exterior color scheme.

Open Up Your Entrance

The charcoal shutters and front door carry one of the darker tones from the DaVinci Slate roof in Castle Gray onto the front of the home. The strong verticals move the eye upward, opening up the entrance.

Create a Cohesive Color Scheme

Multi-width Slate in color Slate Black on the roof of this lovely home inspired the color selected for the shutters. Using black on the lower part of the home gives this exterior a cohesive appearance.

Monochromatic Magic

A lighter shade of gray that coordinates with the Slate Gray roof was an excellent choice for this stone home. When a home has many windows, choose a color that blends in rather than stands out. Selecting a monochromatic combination reduces the contrast and thus the number of things vying for your attention as you approach. A shutter color that that is in low contrast to the background gives the home an upscale appearance.

Focus on the Details

If you have many architectural details, keeping your shutter color the same as your roof, allows the eye to focus on a different aspect. Since shutters aren’t usually the most exciting part of any exterior, there is no reason to have them draw attention away from another more significant feature of the house.

Of course, shutters can be any color that you find appealing, but if you can’t seem to find that perfect color looking to your roof is a great place to find a “can’t go wrong” color.

When you need guidance on choosing an exterior color scheme with your roof and other architectural features of your home, there are many resources to help you in the Projects and Inspiration area of this website.
