Do shutters make a room look smaller? ›

Will my room seem smaller with shutters? When decorating a room the main objective is normally to make a room seem as big and as spacious as possible. Adding shutters to your room will not detract from this and can even enhance the space.

Shutters Can Fit Small Windows No Matter What

So whatever size or shape the windows are, shutters will fit – no exceptions. Smaller windows are in every style: casements, eyebrow, rounded, octagon-shaped windows, and so on. Customized shutters can fit any one of them, even the shapes that other window coverings can't.

Do all houses need shutters? Absolutely not, and many, many houses would look much better without shutters, rather than with “today's” shutters. What do we mean by that? For starters, many shutters today serve no purpose, other than to add an accent color, and to fill in space around windows.

Shutter Width

It is generally best to find a single width that works for all of your windows. The width that usually works best for decorative shutter is between 25% and 33% of the total width of your window including the window trim.

For the most authentic look, we recommend measuring only the window opening not including any frame or trim around it. Typically, the width of your shutters should be half of your total window width.

Proper shutters should at least appear large enough to cover the entirety of the window when shut (as that's, you know, the whole point of shutters). Shutters should be avoided on double-mulled windows, picture windows, bay windows, and most dormer windows.
