When home owners look to decorate their rooms they often want to make the rooms look as spacious and big as possible. Shutters do in fact help towards this and can help you to achieve a more spacious looking living area. Shutters are fitted within the recess of a window so sit flush unlike more traditional fittings such as curtains. This in turn creates blank space around and either side of the window. Because of the fact that there is more wall and floor space showing, the room looks more spacious. Curtains made of heavy fabric can also appear to take up more room due to the size of wall area and floor they demand. The visual simplicity of a room can also be improved by matching the colour of the shutters to your wall colour. This helps create a seamless look around the walls and allows for a great setting for your furniture without looking cluttered. Another great way that shutters create a more spacious looking room is through light reflection. Through using large louvres you certain styles of shutters you can allow maximum light into all areas of your room. Using lighter coloured shutters will also help flood greater levels of light into a room. Clever placements of mirrors can further enhance this effect.

Do shutters make a room look smaller? ›

Will my room seem smaller with shutters? When decorating a room the main objective is normally to make a room seem as big and as spacious as possible. Adding shutters to your room will not detract from this and can even enhance the space.

Do shutters look good on small windows? ›

Shutters Can Fit Small Windows No Matter What

So whatever size or shape the windows are, shutters will fit – no exceptions. Smaller windows are in every style: casements, eyebrow, rounded, octagon-shaped windows, and so on. Customized shutters can fit any one of them, even the shapes that other window coverings can't.

Does a house look better with or without shutters? ›

Do all houses need shutters? Absolutely not, and many, many houses would look much better without shutters, rather than with “today's” shutters. What do we mean by that? For starters, many shutters today serve no purpose, other than to add an accent color, and to fill in space around windows.

What size shutters are best? ›

    Shutter Width

It is generally best to find a single width that works for all of your windows. The width that usually works best for decorative shutter is between 25% and 33% of the total width of your window including the window trim.

For the most authentic look, we recommend measuring only the window opening not including any frame or trim around it. Typically, the width of your shutters should be half of your total window width.

When should you not use shutters? ›

Proper shutters should at least appear large enough to cover the entirety of the window when shut (as that's, you know, the whole point of shutters). Shutters should be avoided on double-mulled windows, picture windows, bay windows, and most dormer windows.

Why did we stop using shutters? ›

The prevalence of blinds, shades and screens on the interior of windows render shutters less functional. Window shutters are often not in proportion to the windows at all, likely selected because mass manufacturing determined standard widths or that size of windows were prioritized over proportion.

They're also desired by home-buyers because of their durability, light-filtering capabilities and energy efficiency. In some instances, they may even boost your home's resale value. So, we can confidently say, plantation shutters are still in style. And they'll remain in style for years to come.

Should shutters be lighter or darker than house? ›

Should shutters be flat or satin? ›

While people tend to choose flat colors for siding, gloss or semi-gloss paints are often chosen for trim and shutters. This is because glossy paint will bring out the details, which you would want to avoid on the walls to minimize nicks and scratches – but could be great to emphasize your shutters.
